First I’ll call the roll.”
So she ticked off everyone’s name, like this:
“Carl the Carrot?”
— Carl answered “Here!”
“Alice the Apple?”
— “Here,” said Alice.
“Frank the Floor?”
— “Here!”
“Wilma the Wall?”
— “Here!”
“Theresa the Tomato?”
— “Here!”
“Sudsy the Soap?”
— “Here!”
“Sarah the Sink?”
— “Here!”
“Cybil the Ceiling?”
— “Here!”
“Dirk the Door?”
— “Here!”
“Leslie the Light?”
— “Here!” said Leslie, who blinked on, and didn’t
go off again. Constance ticked off dozens of names, and
everyone answered “Here!” until Constance called out:
“Irving the Inch?”
Nobody answered.
“Irving the Inch?” Constance repeated.
Still there was no answer.
