trends that you’ve just got toget on and it’s like this chick in leather
wearing black makeup and with a shaved head and she’s fucking
beautiful and I’m crying as I’m reading this and thinking, you
fuckers, you’re going to take this away from me too? Man, I just got
up out of my chair and washed all my makeup off and threw away all
those clothes and said, ‘I’m going to be as God made me to be, and
I’m not going to be judged by how I look anymore,’ and I walked out
straight out of rehab.”
“What happened after that, Melissa?” pressed Safora.
“I got arrested for indecent exposure and fined three-hundred
dollars. But ever since then I’ve tried to look at myself differently.
Still, I cry about the fact that I’m not one of the beautiful people and

that directed their attacks. But what is this higher imperative? Is it an
individual? Is it a magazine? Is it a group of people, or is it society
itself? Most would say that it was in fact society that was guilty, but
this is not true. Society is constantly changing, and as such cannot be
pinned down. We cannot fault the ocean for being stormy; it is a
pawn to greater forces just as the boat is.”
“So what is this terrible force? As the Omniraja teaches us, it is
the linear, upward gradient; the force that the church once
successfully controlled for eons, but which was let out of the bag
during the Enlightenment period in Europe, when it was
transformed it into a god. What I am speaking of is the unchecked
force, of progresssssss.”
She continued: “We consider ourselves to be the most
evolutionarily advanced beings on this planet, and hence the most
